Legacy Tutorial

Equipping Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Mission

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is a foundational high school mathematics course that helps students coming into Legacy to get on the same page in math, as we build conceptual understanding of algebra 1 topics. Students will leave class each week with the knowledge and skills to complete the topics being studied each week. A variety of strategies are used in class, including small group work and class lectures. Students will complete the notes pages in class, which will be used to help them recall how to complete the homework.

Curriculum: Math Deciphered Algebra 1, written and developed by Leann Warren

To see a list of topics studied, see the course outline below.

Pre-requisite skills needed:

  • working with positive and negative numbers (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing), fractions, and decimals
  • order of operations
  • understanding exponents (ie knowing 3^2 or “3 squared” means 3×3=9)
  • graphing points (x,y) on the coordinate plane
  • working with algebraic expressions:  combining like terms and the distributive property
  • solving equations through 2-step equations (ie 2x+1=5) and equations with x on both sides
  • conceptually understanding and finding the slope of a line using 2 points as well as from a graph

Note: A TI-84+ graphing calculator is required for this class.
